This colt can't see anything, but he obviously loves the feeling of playing with zippers.

If the slide will not come to Buddha,

by gus andrews, concerning the matter of Babies

Buddha will go down the slide (along with MeFi founder Matt Haughey's daughter). From his comment on the photo: "[She] loves Thai Buddhas we've seen in other gardens so we bought one last summer. Today she decided it was a friend to pal around with so she went on the swings with it and down the slide several times."

TWIN baby pandas! And baby red pandas!

A panda gave birth to twins in southwest China, surprising researchers who were only expecting a single cub.

The first born was male and sex of the second born was unknown because the mother would not let it out of her grip after the Thursday birth, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Peregrination

by sushiesque, concerning the matter of Babies

Gothamist recently reported that a nestful of peregrine falcon chicks was found on the Throgs Neck Bridge. They're snow-white clumps of down with grumpy, grey faces.

A cursory flickr search reveals that the sight of hard-hatted men holding adorable baby birds (of prey) is not unique to New York City:

Washington State's Department of Transportation (which has a flickr account!) even puts nesting boxes on bridges:

Falcons hunt starlings and pigeons, the main source of bird droppings which corrode the bridge paint. The faster the bridge paint corrodes, the more frequently bridge maintenance crews must work on the bridge. In short, the peregrine falcons help save taxpayer dollars.

Oxytocin, not OxyContin

by Rachel Anne, concerning the matter of Babies

OxyContin can ruin your life, or at the very least your pants, saith prescription drug abuse prevention posters.

Oxytocin is a naturally-produced hormone that plays a role in childbirth and lactation, including activating the "let-down reflex." It also makes us trust each other, bond with each other and want to take care of babies.

So the next time you're looking at your darling little one (or someone else's) and get all misty-eyed;  just remember, it's the oxytocin. If you need a visual reminder, put the little rugrat in one of these, from the Made with Molecules people:

Then snuggle the little one to your heart's content. It's perfectly natural.
